Two of my favorite childrens dvds are "Happy to Be Nappy and Other Stories of Me" and the classic "Free to Be You and Me". Also, the Magic School Bus series is pretty fabulous, and WordGirl, presently on PBS and youtube, is an amazing cartoon.
As for books, I am in awe of how many fabulous childrens books are out there these days. From _All the Colors of the Earth_ and _The Skin I'm In_ to _Amazing Grace_ and _I Look Like a Girl_ to _Big Momma Makes the World_ and _Earth Mother_ to _Crossing Bok Chitto_ and _As Good as Anybody_ to _King and King_ and _Molly's Family_ and beyond, there are so many beautifully illustrated, informative tools for parent/child learning and conversation that it can be a bit overwhelming.
