Discussing hard topics
Saturday's M+P meeting was just awesome... Thanks to T for facilitating it.
I have been thinking and talking about how I will address illness and loss with our daughter as she grows up and to be honest the thought scares me a lot. How do I present such material without scaring her unnecessarily? How do I know if I am telling her too much information or too little information for her age?
The other parents at the meeting certainly gave me some wisdom to draw on. I found myself doing what every parent in this technological age does: I googled the subject and came up with a few good resources I thought I would share with you all.
Tips on Talking to Children about Parents Illness. This is a site for social workers.
Tips for Talking with Kids about Mental Illness This is a site by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
PBS Parents article about talking to your kids about health This article focuses more on talking to kids about their own health/illness.
A nice article from Hospice about talking with kids about death
Talking to Kids about Death. This is another PBS article.
Any other reading material you all would recommend?
